Waterproof and Weather-Resistant Are Not the Same

The Disposable Fly Glue Trap is described as waterproof, and the adhesive is described as weather-resistant. These are two different claims, and they fail in different ways.

Waterproof board. The paper or plastic base resists water absorption. Rain running over the surface does not immediately destroy the board. This is a property of the base material.

Weather-resistant adhesive. The glue resists softening in heat and retains tack through normal outdoor humidity changes. This is a property of the adhesive.

Neither claim means the trap is designed for open outdoor exposure. A board hung on an open fence in direct rain and full sun will lose tack at the surface, collect dust and grit, and catch far less than the same board under an eave. The board survives the weather. The adhesive surface does not perform at the same level.

In practice, the outdoor positions that work are sheltered: under a roof overhang, inside a barn, under a lean-to, on a covered patio, inside a greenhouse. Open field positions work for a shorter period and need more frequent replacement.

Flat Board Area and Ribbon Area

A flat board and a hanging ribbon both catch flies, but they distribute the adhesive differently, and that affects which positions suit each format.

Flat board. A defined rectangular area, 20 × 25 cm on the larger size. The glue is concentrated in a compact zone. A fly that enters that zone is likely to contact the surface. The board suits positions where flies gather in a small area, such as a window, a doorway, a bin or a single stall.

Ribbon strip. A long narrow strip. The same total adhesive area is spread over a much longer length. It intercepts flies moving across a wide open space, such as a barn aisle or a warehouse roof. It catches fewer flies per unit area but covers more of the flight path.

A buyer sourcing for a barn with a wide open ceiling usually needs the ribbon. A buyer sourcing for a poultry house, a greenhouse or a food-service back area usually needs the flat board. The two formats are not interchangeable, and stocking both in one catalogue is common.

Non-Target Catch Outdoors

Outdoor hanging changes the non-target risk compared with an indoor placement. The board is visible to more than flies.

· Birds. Small birds investigating a bright yellow object under an eave can contact the adhesive. The glue is difficult to remove from feathers, and a bird that cannot fly is a welfare problem. Hang boards where birds do not perch or nest.

· Lizards and geckos. In warm climates, lizards hunt flies on walls and ceilings. A board hung on a wall can catch lizards along with the flies. Check boards regularly in regions where lizards are common.

· Beneficial insects. Hoverflies, parasitic wasps and ladybirds are caught along with the target flies. In a greenhouse or near flowering crops, this is a real cost of the method.

· Bats. A board hung near a roost can catch bats. The adhesive is not a pesticide, but a stuck bat requires careful handling. Keep boards away from roosting areas.

Where non-target catch is a concern, the board should be placed inside a covered structure or in a position that only flying insects can reach. A board in an open position catches whatever flies into it.

Barns, Stables and Poultry Houses

These are the positions where the board is most often specified, and each has a different fly problem.

· Barns and stables. Stable flies and house flies breed in wet bedding, manure and feed spillage. The board hung near the source catches adults, but it does not remove the breeding site. Clean bedding and feed management remain the primary control.

· Poultry houses. High humidity and dust shorten the board life. Hang boards where dust settles less, and replace more frequently than the label figure suggests. In a poultry house, a board may need changing every 3 to 4 weeks.

· Livestock pens. Hang above the reach of cattle and horses. A board at head height can be chewed or become entangled with an animal.

· Feed storage. Dust from feed settles on the glue. A board near a feed bin loses tack faster than a board near a door.

In all four positions, the board is a knock-down tool. It reduces adult fly numbers but does not replace sanitation, drainage and manure management. A program that relies only on glue boards will not control a fly population that is breeding on site.

Field Life Under Outdoor Conditions

The label figure of up to 3 months applies to a sheltered position with low dust and moderate temperature. Outdoor and agricultural positions change that figure.

· Dust. A visible film on the yellow surface reduces tack before the board is full. In a barn, a feed store or a poultry house, expect 3 to 6 weeks rather than 12.

· Heat. Direct sun softens the adhesive and lets larger insects pull free. In an unshaded position in summer, effective life is shorter.

· Rain and humidity. The base resists water, but rain running over the glue surface reduces tack. A board in an open position after a rain event should be checked and often replaced.

· Saturation. A board covered in insects cannot catch more. A full board left hanging gives a false impression that the fly problem has stopped.

Replace when the board is visibly loaded, when the surface no longer feels tacky through a gloved finger, or at the end of the label period, whichever comes first. In an outdoor position, the visual check is more important than the calendar, because conditions vary more than indoors.

Label and Brand Confirmation

The Disposable Fly Glue Trap is supplied under the GOLDEN-CAT brand. Some catalogue versions list JM as the brand on the specification table. JM is a separate label used in certain markets. The two names cannot appear on the same pack without a label agreement, so the brand should be confirmed on the artwork before printing.

Private label orders can carry the buyer’s own brand, with custom board size, string length, pack count and print. The adhesive and board material statements remain the same regardless of the label on the pack.

Bulk packaging of disposable fly glue traps

Packing and Channel Fit

The 5-piece pack is the standard retail unit. It suits agricultural supply stores, hardware shops, garden centers and e-commerce listings. The 100-piece carton suits distributors who break cartons for smaller orders and PCOs who issue boards to technicians.

Alternative pack counts, board size, string length and private label artwork are available for OEM orders. The carton configuration can be adjusted for e-commerce and marketplace inbound requirements. Confirmed pack counts should be written into the purchase order.

Buyer Questions

Is the brand GOLDEN-CAT or JM?
The product is supplied under GOLDEN-CAT. JM is a separate label used in some markets. Confirm the brand on the pack artwork before printing, because the two names cannot appear on the same pack without a label agreement.

Can the trap be hung outdoors in the rain?
The board resists water, but the adhesive surface does not perform at the same level after rain runs over it. A sheltered outdoor position under an eave or a roof overhang works. An open position in direct rain and sun shortens the effective life considerably.

Why does the label say 3 months when the board stops catching sooner?
The 3-month figure assumes a sheltered position with low dust and moderate temperature. Dust, heat, rain and saturation each shorten the effective period. In a barn or a poultry house, 3 to 6 weeks is a realistic replacement cycle. Check the surface before assuming the product has failed.

Will the board catch birds or lizards?
It can. The board is visible and sticky, and a bird or a lizard that contacts it will be caught. Hang boards where birds do not perch and check regularly in regions where lizards are common. The adhesive is not a pesticide, but a stuck animal requires careful handling.

Does the board control flies in a barn on its own?
No. The board catches adult flies. It does not remove wet bedding, manure or feed spillage where flies breed. Sanitation and drainage remain the primary controls. The board is a knock-down tool used alongside those measures.

Is RoHS applicable to this product?
No. RoHS applies to electrical and electronic equipment. This product is paper or plastic board with adhesive and string. An adhesive composition statement and a board material statement are the relevant documents.

Can the board be cut to a smaller size?
It can be cut, but the cut edge exposes fresh adhesive and the string is attached at the top. A cut board is best used as a smaller hanging piece from a wire, not as a replacement for a full board. For a fixed smaller size, order a custom board rather than cutting standard stock.
