How the Trap Works

Three things bring a fruit fly to the board, and they operate at different distances.

Color at range. The yellow surface is visible from across a kitchen or a produce display. Fruit flies respond to yellow in the same wavelength range as many other small Diptera.

Attractant up close. The food-based attractant carries a fermenting or fruity odor that draws flies from a few meters away. This is the part that brings them to the board rather than past it.

Adhesive on contact. The glue holds the insect once it lands. There is no pesticide active ingredient in the trap. Capture is mechanical.

The apple shape is not part of the attraction mechanism. It is a retail design decision. It makes the trap acceptable on a counter, a buffet station or a bar top where a plain yellow rectangle would be removed by staff or complained about by customers.

Fruit Flies, Fungus Gnats and Drain Flies Are Not the Same Problem

These three insects are often grouped together in retail copy, but they breed in different places. A trap placed for one will underperform against another.

A trap beside a fruit bowl will catch fruit flies. It will catch few drain flies, because those emerge at the drain and stay close to it. If the trap is filling with small moths rather than fruit flies, the source is likely a dry food store rather than fruit, and the trap is in the wrong place.

Placement in Food Areas

Retail and food-service buyers ask about placement more than any other question, because the trap has to be somewhere staff and customers can see it without creating a hygiene problem.

· Not above food. Do not hang or place the trap directly over open food, preparation surfaces or buffet lines. A trap that falls or drips into food is a contamination incident, not a pest control failure.

· Not on food-contact surfaces. The base of the trap should sit on a non-food-contact surface or on a small tray. Do not place it directly on a cutting board or a prep counter.

· Near the source, not in the middle of the room. Fruit fly activity concentrates around fruit, juice stations, bottle returns and waste. A trap in the center of a dining room catches few flies and is visible to every customer.

· Out of reach of children and pets. The adhesive is not a pesticide, but a stuck trap is still a handling problem in a home or a hotel room.

· Away from strong air currents. Air conditioning vents and fans break up the attractant plume. A trap in moving air catches less than one in still air at the same distance from the source.

When 30 Days Is Not 30 Days

The 30-day figure applies to a clean, indoor, still-air position. Several conditions shorten it.

· Dust and flour. A visible dust film on the adhesive reduces tack before the board is full. In bakeries and dry stores, expect a shorter effective life.

· Heat and steam. Commercial kitchens and dishwash areas soften the adhesive and shorten attractant life.

· Saturation. A board covered in insects cannot catch more. A full board left in place gives a false sense that the problem has stopped.

· Drying of the attractant. The food-based lure loses strength over time, faster in dry, warm air.

Replace the trap when the surface is visibly loaded, when the attractant has dried, or at 30 days, whichever comes first. In food-service settings, write the date on the base at placement so staff know when to change it.

What the Trap Does Not Do

A glue trap catches adults. It does not remove the breeding site. If fruit is left to overripe in a bowl, or a recycling bin is not emptied, the trap will fill and the population will continue. The trap is a monitoring and knock-down tool, not a substitute for cleaning the source.

For drain flies, the drain itself needs cleaning before a trap will make a visible difference. For fungus gnats, the potting soil needs to dry out between waterings. Retail copy that presents the trap as a standalone solution to all small flying insects sets up a customer complaint.

Does the trap contain any pesticide?
No pesticide active ingredient is used. Capture is by adhesive. The attractant is food-based. The trap is not intended to be eaten or handled by children or pets, and used traps should be wrapped and discarded as general waste.

Will the apple shape attract more fruit flies than a flat yellow board?
No. The color and the attractant do the attracting. The shape makes the trap acceptable in visible locations such as counters, buffet stations and bar tops. Where appearance does not matter, a flat yellow board of the same area is usually cheaper per unit.

Can it be used in a commercial kitchen during service?
It can be placed in a back-of-house area, but not over open food, preparation surfaces or dishwashing areas where steam and water spray are present. Place it near the fruit prep station, the juice station or the waste bin, on a non-food-contact surface.

Why is my trap catching small moths instead of fruit flies?
Small moths usually indicate a dry food source such as flour, grain, nuts or pet food, not overripe fruit. Check dry stores and sealed containers. A fruit fly trap placed near a dry store is in the wrong position for the insect present.

Does the trap work against drain flies?
It catches some adults near the drain, but it does not remove the organic film inside the pipe where they breed. Clean the drain and overflow first, then place the trap near the opening to catch emerging adults.

What certification documents are available for food-service buyers?
A composition statement for the adhesive and attractant, label text and an export documentation set are available. A food-contact compliance statement can be prepared on request for a specific market. RoHS is not applicable to this product because it contains no electrical or electronic components.
